Built in an innovative cluster design, Deerfield’s Skilled Nursing Center offers private rooms (some with shared baths), grouped in neighborhoods that contain comfortable sitting areas, living rooms and common spaces. With the addition of 14 spacious rooms skilled nursing has a 62 resident capacity. Residential in design and décor, the center is perfect for residents who need more intensive care, provided 24 hours a day. A sunny outdoor courtyard provides a secure, enclosed space for gardening, pet therapy, sipping iced tea in the sunshine, or just watching birds flock to the feeders. Activities include movies, trips, discussion groups, social events, stimulating musical programs, and church services in the Center, conducted in the innovative new Health Care Chapel by Deerfield’s chaplain on Sundays and Wednesdays.
“Coming to Deerfield is a family tradition,” says Nell-Gray Larson. “I couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend my last days. There are interesting things to do, and help is here whenever we need it.”
Nell-Gray, whom everyone calls “Peter,” has a long-standing connection with Deerfield. Her mother, Nell Wilcox, was a resident of the “old” Deerfield. Living to be 104 years old, Mrs. Wilcox attained membership in the vaunted “100” Club. Nell-Gray’s father was the rector at St. James Episcopal in Hendersonville, NC. In 2000, Nell-Gray moved into an apartment in Deerfield. From there, she transferred to Haden Hall, then moved into our Skilled Nursing wing in 2004.
Her daily breakfast partner, Jean McNett, chimed in, “I love it here! I had to go to the hospital about two weeks ago, and when I came back, it felt like coming home. We are so lucky to have this place.”
